The Louisiana Parish Checklist Project
This is a project undertaken by Rosemary Seidler to produce a checklist for each of Louisiana’s 64 parishes.
Resources include Shreveport’s Bird Study Group database, LBRC Reports, Dan Purrington’s The Birds of Souheastern Louisiana, Lowrey’s Louisiana Birds, eBird, and reports from birders throughout the state. I am particularly indebted to these birders who generously took the time to contribute to this project. These checklists do not necessarily reflect accepted records of the Louisiana Bird Records Committee but at least some attempt at consistency and reliability is used. It is intended to reflect the current records of bird sightings on file, somewhere, for each parish. It should be noted that these lists are far from all inclusive. Some parishes have been very well birded and reported, resulting in parish lists exceeding 400 species (Cameron). Other parishes have produced very few reports over the years and have lists well under 200 (St. Helena).
This is a work in progress. The important thing is to report species not on the list! Species in BOLD should also be reported to the Louisiana Bird Records Committee (LBRC http://losbird.org/lbrc/lbrc.htm). Contact Rosemary Seidler if you have questions or problems accessing the files. The master spreadsheet for parishes is in EXCEL format. Each parish checklist is in Adobe Acrobat format.
